From filing to registration

DateStep
18 October 2024Application filed
31 October 2024Pre-assessment letter on the statement of goods
28 October 2025Search recorded; examiner's first report
March 2026Our response to the examiner's report (letter dated 6 March 2026)
31 March 2026Application approved for advertisement
14 September 2026Registered as TMA1,445,335

The examiner's report asked for the goods to be described in specific, ordinary commercial terms. Our response set out the statement of goods that CIPO approved, and that is the description now on the register.

Approval and registration are two different steps. The March notice meant the application had passed examination and would be advertised; after advertisement, anyone has a period in which to oppose an application on the grounds the Trademarks Act allows. Registration is the step that confers the exclusive right under the Act to use the mark throughout Canada for the registered goods.

Having HAMO registered in Canada, our home market and where we build, matters to us. It is a quiet but real foundation for the name therapists and their clients know us by.

What the registration does — and does not — cover

  • It gives Hamo AI the exclusive right to use HAMO throughout Canada for the goods listed above, and HAMO can carry the ® symbol in Canada when used with those goods.
  • It is specific to the listed goods. It is not a registration of HAMO for other goods or services.
  • It is national. The registration is Canadian; protection in other countries depends on registrations there.
  • It must be renewed, and the mark kept in use. Renewal falls every 10 years, starting 14 September 2036, and the mark needs to stay in use with the registered goods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HAMO a registered trademark in Canada?

Yes. The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) registered HAMO, in standard characters, on 14 September 2026 under registration number TMA1,445,335. The registered owner is Hamo AI Technology Ltd. of Toronto. The application, number 2356822, was filed on 18 October 2024.

What does the Canadian registration cover?

Three goods in Nice Class 9: downloadable computer software for use by mental health professionals for creating, managing and deploying AI-powered virtual therapy avatars; downloadable software for remote mental health consultations between professionals and their clients through AI-driven virtual avatars; and a downloadable software platform that lets professionals monitor and supervise AI-based therapeutic interactions with clients. The registration protects the mark for those goods; it does not register HAMO for other goods or services.

What is the difference between the March 2026 approval and this registration?

The approval notice of 31 March 2026 meant the application had passed examination and would be advertised; after advertisement, anyone has a period in which to oppose it on the grounds the Trademarks Act allows. Registration, on 14 September 2026, is the step that gives the owner the exclusive right under the Act to use the mark throughout Canada for the registered goods. Only after registration is HAMO a registered trademark in Canada.

How long does the registration last?

A Canadian trademark registration must be renewed every 10 years from the registration date; the first renewal of TMA1,445,335 falls on 14 September 2036. To stay on the register, the mark also needs to remain in use with the registered goods.

Where else is the HAMO trademark registered?

In China, the China National Intellectual Property Administration registered HAMO for Hamo AI on 28 September 2025 (registration No. 84613588) in Nice Class 42, covering services such as AI technology consulting, AI research, computer software design and data storage. The Canadian and Chinese registrations are separate: each covers its own listed goods or services, in its own country.
